The Reflectance Meter is designed to estimate filterable insolubles in fuel samples after aging and cooling. The fuel sample is filtered, and the average amount of insolubles is evaluated by measuring the light reflectance of the filter pads. The reflectance scale is defined using an unused filter pad as the 100% reference and a commercial black standard as the 0% reference.

The instrument uses ratiometric reflectance measurement and advanced electronic components to provide convenient operation. Calibration requires two reference points: a black cavity standard for the dark or zero offset and a standard plaque with known diffuse reflectance, calibrated to a traceable national standard. The reflected light produces a proportional voltage in the photosensor array, establishing the reference point for measurement.
