Half Shade Polarimeter Setup For Physics Lab

Half Shade Polarimeter is a useful apparatus designed for understanding, studying, and analyzing the concept of polarization. For improved accuracy in determining specific rotation, the apparatus compares the brightness of two halves in the field of view.

The apparatus works on Biot’s Law. When plane-polarized light passes through an optically active substance, the plane of polarization of light rotates. A half-wave plate is used to study the effect of relative rotation between the polaroids on the intensity of transmitted light. By comparing the brightness of the two halves, the optical rotation produced by an optically active substance in solution form can be determined.
