Half Shade Polarimeter is a useful apparatus designed for understanding, studying, and analyzing the concept of polarization. For accurate determination of specific rotation, the instrument works by comparing the brightness of two halves in the field of view.

The apparatus is based on Biot’s Law. When plane-polarized light passes through an optically active substance, the plane of polarization rotates. By comparing the brightness of the two halves, the optical rotation produced by an optically active substance in solution form can be determined.
