The pocket vane tester is designed for the rapid determination of shear strength in cohesive soils. It allows multiple strength measurements with different failure plane orientations without requiring sample trimming. Only a reasonably flat surface of 25 mm diameter is needed.

Its compact and practical design makes it suitable for field measurements on soil surfaces and in profile pits, as well as laboratory testing of soil samples.

The shear strength of soil depends on several characteristics, including granular composition, humus content, moisture, vegetation coverage and root density.

For accurate measurements, a flat surface is required. The vanes must be carefully placed in the soil, and the instrument should be rotated at a constant, steady speed.
