Sand ruler for Soil Field Measurement testing

Soil grain size distribution, also known as soil texture, is an important characteristic of a soil profile. It influences several agricultural and physical properties, including ease of tillage, capillary conductivity, available moisture, soil permeability, compaction and root development.

The sand ruler is a transparent disc containing standard grain-size reference samples. It provides a convenient visual aid for estimating particle size distribution and identifying the granular composition of soil samples.

Working method :

The sand fraction can be classified using the median grain size. A representative portion of the sample is rubbed dry between the fingers in the palm of the hand. The sample is then placed in the hollow area at the centre of the ruler. The average grain size is estimated by visually comparing the sample with the standard reference fractions.

Available variations :

• 10-Fraction Sand Ruler : Divided into the following grain-size classes: 63, 90, 125, 180, 250, 355, 500, 710, 1000, 1400 and 2000 µm.
• 6-Fraction Sand Ruler : Divided into the following grain-size classes: 63, 105, 150, 210, 300, 420 and 2000 µm.
