+91 98967 93832The tension infiltrometer set is designed to measure the unsaturated hydraulic properties of soil. It controls the rate of water infiltration by maintaining a small negative pressure as water moves from the infiltrometer disc into the soil.
Unlike conventional single or double ring infiltrometers, which allow water to infiltrate under atmospheric pressure, the tension infiltrometer applies controlled negative pressure. This reduces water entry into large cracks and wormholes, allowing more water to infiltrate through the soil matrix.
By adjusting the negative pressure, different levels of soil saturation can be evaluated. Higher negative pressure allows fewer soil pores to fill with water, making it possible to determine unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. The instrument operates within a practical tension range of 0 to -30 cm H?O. At or near zero tension, the measured infiltration rate can approximate the saturated hydraulic conductivity.
Working method :
Water is supplied through the infiltrometer disc while maintaining a selected negative pressure. The infiltration rate is recorded at different tension levels to evaluate soil hydraulic behaviour.
Hydraulic properties can be calculated using different methods, including the Gardner log-linear relationship between tension and hydraulic conductivity. Alternatively, inverse parameter estimation methods can be used to calculate van Genuchten parameters from infiltration data.
