Water Washout Tester for Oil Fuel and Petroleum Testing Instruments

The Water Washout Tester is designed to evaluate the resistance of lubricating grease to water washout under controlled test conditions. A grease sample is packed into a ball bearing, which is rotated while exposed to a steady stream of water. The percentage of grease washed out during a one-hour test period is determined by weighing the bearing assembly before and after testing.

The apparatus rotates an ASTM ball bearing at 600 rpm inside a modified bearing and housing assembly while directing a controlled water jet onto the bearing. The system consists of a water reservoir, bearing housing, circulation system, and drive motor. The reservoir incorporates a cartridge heater, thermoregulator, and thermometer port to maintain the specified test temperatures of 100°F and 175°F (38°C and 79°C).

A circulation system equipped with a constant-velocity carbon-bearing gear pump, valves, and flowmeter delivers water through a 1 mm capillary spray nozzle aimed at the bearing housing. The two-pulley drive arrangement allows independent pump operation for water circulation and heating.
