An induction coil is used to produce high-voltage pulses from a low-voltage direct current (DC) supply.
The induction coil consists of a central cylindrical soft iron core with two insulated coils wound around it: an inner primary coil with relatively few turns of copper wire and an outer secondary coil with a larger number of thinner copper wire turns.
The complete assembly is mounted on a rigid wooden base for stable operation.
The apparatus incorporates a fully adjustable vibrating interrupter arm, while spark suppression capacitors are housed within the base.
Input voltage: 6–12 V DC through 4 mm socket terminals.
A pair of pointer electrodes is supplied for creating the spark gap. The electrodes have insulated handles for safe adjustment of the spark gap.
The apparatus demonstrates how a changing magnetic field is produced when current flows through the primary coil and how the interrupter repeatedly makes and breaks the current, producing changes in the magnetic field.
These changes induce a high voltage in the secondary coil through electromagnetic induction. Due to the greater number of turns in the secondary coil, the generated voltage is sufficiently high to produce an electrical spark.
Different spark lengths can be achieved by adjusting the electrode gap.
