Spectrum tubes are partially evacuated capillary glass tubes filled with a gas, usually an element or small molecule.
Sealed metal electrodes are provided at both ends of each tube for applying voltage and generating the electrical field required for excitation.
When connected to a suitable power supply and switched on, an electrical discharge passes through the tube, exciting the gas and producing light.
When viewed through a spectroscope, the illuminated tube produces a characteristic spectral pattern for the gas contained inside.
Spectrum tubes should be used intermittently and are designed for operation intervals of approximately 30 seconds, followed by a continuous cooling period.
Each tube includes a 10 cm long fine capillary section in the middle for improved viewing.
Overall tube length: approximately 28 cm.
