Dip Circle

A dip circle is a precision instrument used to determine the angle of inclination of the Earth's magnetic field relative to the horizontal plane.

The instrument features a finely balanced magnetic needle designed for accurate and stable movement, supported on hardened pivots and low-friction bearings.

The needle is mounted at the centre of a graduated circular scale divided into four quadrants, allowing the magnetic inclination to be measured accurately.

The needle assembly can be removed and repositioned for reversal measurements while maintaining proper alignment and minimizing the possibility of pivot or bearing damage.

The magnetic needle and graduated scale are enclosed within a non-magnetic aluminum housing fitted with a clear viewing window. The complete assembly can rotate about a vertical axis mounted on a sturdy base.

A circular scale provided on the base enables direct reading of the horizontal orientation of the instrument.

The horizontal scale is graduated through 360° and is provided with a spirit level for accurate leveling during operation.

The heavy-duty base is supported by an adjustable tripod arrangement with leveling screws for stable positioning.

When the instrument is aligned with the magnetic meridian, the needle indicates the direction of the Earth's magnetic field, enabling practical study of magnetic dip and inclination.
