Electric Whirl

The Electric Whirl is a simple electrostatic demonstration apparatus consisting of a three-pointed star-shaped rotor with all points curved in the same direction. The rotor is pivoted on a short insulating shaft and rotates when connected to an electrostatic source. A 4 mm connection socket is provided at the base for electrical connection. When charged, the metallic points develop an electric field and release charge into the surrounding air, producing a repulsive effect that causes the rotor to spin rapidly in the direction opposite to the pointed ends. If the rotor is initially rotated in the reverse direction, it gradually stops and changes its direction of rotation.
