Barnes Maze for Behavioral Research test

The Barnes Maze is designed for assessing spatial learning and memory in rats and mice without the need for food deprivation. The apparatus consists of a large round open platform with peripheral holes and a dark goal box positioned beneath one of the holes. The animal is placed in a brightly lit environment and naturally seeks the dark enclosed goal box. The time required for the animal to locate the goal box using visuospatial cues surrounding the maze is measured. The test provides a lower-stress behavioral assessment compared with food-restricted paradigms and is suitable for behavioral phenotyping studies.
