The tangent galvanometer is a precision instrument used for studying and measuring small electric currents.
Its operation is based on the tangent law of magnetism, where current passing through a circular coil produces a magnetic field at the centre perpendicular to the plane of the coil.
The instrument consists of an insulated copper wire coil wound on a non-magnetic Bakelite bobbin with an internal diameter of approximately 162.5 mm.
The copper wire coil has three sets of windings with 2, 50, and 500 turns, provided with four terminals for convenient electrical connections. Each winding is clearly marked.
The coil assembly is mounted on a non-magnetic tripod metal base supported by leveling screws for stable positioning.
The coil can be rotated about a vertical axis passing through its centre for accurate alignment during experiments.
A compass box is mounted horizontally at the centre of the coil. It is detachable and can also be used separately for magnetometer experiments.
The instrument is fitted with an aluminum dial approximately 100 mm in diameter, graduated from 0° to 90° four times, with an anti-parallax mirror and a centrally mounted magnetic needle with an aluminum pointer for accurate readings.
