The Francis turbine is a type of reaction turbine that converts the pressure energy of water into kinetic energy in both the distributor and the rotor. Water is supplied to the distributor through a spiral housing and accelerated by adjustable guide vanes before being directed onto the rotor blades. The redirection and further acceleration of water in the rotor generates an impulse that is transferred to the rotor.
This teaching equipment is designed to demonstrate the operating principle of a Francis reaction turbine. The experimental unit consists of a rotor, distributor with adjustable guide vanes, band brake for loading the turbine and a housing with a transparent front panel. The transparent cover allows clear observation of the water flow, rotor and guide vanes during operation.
The angle of attack and consequently the rotor power can be varied by adjusting the guide vanes. Turbine torque is determined through force measurement using a band brake and spring balances. A non-contact speed sensor is used to measure rotational speed, while a pressure gauge indicates the water pressure at the turbine inlet.
The unit can be positioned securely on a suitable base module. Water supply and flow rate measurement can be provided through the base module or alternatively through the laboratory water supply.
