Wave Energy Converter OWC Teaching Equipment

Wave Energy Converter, OWC is designed for practical teaching and investigation of wave energy conversion using an oscillating water column system. The complete setup consists of a wave generator, wave flume and wave energy converter.

The wave generator features a control unit, AC motor with adjustable frequency and adjustable displacer lift for generating different wave conditions. A movable wave measuring device with a level sensor is provided for measuring wave height, while a baffle plate guides the generated waves into the chamber.

The wave energy converter incorporates an oscillating water column, chamber and turbine unit. The turbine unit consists of a rotor and generator, with pressure measuring points provided to determine the flow velocity through the turbine.

The turbine can initially be started using a DC motor and switches to generator operation for electricity production once the target speed is reached. The system can be operated manually using switch boxes or digitally through PC-based software, with data acquisition via USB.
